Man Responsible for Rollover Accident in Van Buren, NY Faces Multiple Charges

Despite the best efforts of many government agencies and non-profit coalitions Americans continue to drive while under the influence of alcohol.  Holiday weekends are notorious for numerous accidents as party-goers head out onto our highways after drinking.

One such driver’s party almost ended when his Jeep rolled off the road and landed on its roof.  The jaws of life were needed to pry him out of his badly damaged vehicle.  The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for multiple injuries.  There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.  The driver is facing charges of DWI, possession of marijuana, and traffic charges.  Witnesses claim the Jeep was speeding before it ran off the road and overturned.

According to MADD drunk driving is the number one committed violent crime in America.  The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) has done extensive research on the causes and effects of drunk driving.  According to their statistics, last year, more than 305,000 people were injured. This means that last year, every two minutes, someone in America was injured in an alcohol-related crash.

Over 95% of Americans of driving age agree that drinking and driving are dangerous yet every 33 minutes someone in America dies in an alcohol related accident.  With so many people aware that drinking and driving is dangerous, one would believe that there would be little to no problem with accidents due to drunk driving in the United States.  However, impaired drivers in 22 states actually increased the number of alcohol related accidents last year.

What can be done to reduce the number of injuries and lives lost due to drinking and driving?  Authorities in New York implemented widespread DUI checkpoints this holiday weekend.  A total of 12 checkpoints were set up to both deter drunk drivers and catch those who are under the influence.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that last year, sobriety checkpoints decreased crash and fatality rates from between 18 and 24% in the areas they were implemented.  Well publicized checkpoints work by deterring drivers from drinking as they know the checkpoints will be in place but do not know where their exact locations.

Concerned citizens and elected officials continue to work to stop the alcohol related death toll from rising in the United States.  These dedicated groups of people are working on every level, from community based initiatives to nationwide ads campaigns, to bring an end to the tragic deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers.  Until there are no impaired drivers on the road, there is a chance you will be affected by this violent crime.  If you or someone you know has been injured by a drunk driver, please contact attorneys Carroll and Carroll at (570) 882-8683.
