Letter to The Editor on Corporate Responsibility
Poll Says Americans Resoundingly
Distrust Corporations, Support Justice System
The results of a new public opinion survey conducted by nationally respected pollster Peter Hart show that Americans are deeply concerned about corporate responsibility and misconduct.
The poll indicates that concern about corporate wrongdoing is a major source of anxiety in the United States--and that the public sees the civil justice system as an important check and balance against corporate abuse.
Actions by companies--such as paying huge salaries and bonuses to CEOs while cutting jobs and employee benefits--are reasons Americans don’t trust businesses to act responsibly. Other reasons include corporations defaulting on pension obligations when top executives still get large retirement packages.
Of the people surveyed, 70% support the civil justice system as an important remedy for corporate misconduct. They reject legal “reforms” that restrict plaintiffs’ ability to hold corporations accountable and get fair restitution.
Further, 70% say holding companies accountable when their actions harm consumers, employees, or communities should be a much higher priority than limiting jury awards for pain and suffering.
By a margin of 65% to 25%, voters will support candidates who defend the civil justice system over candidates who assail “frivolous lawsuits” and push for “tort reform.” Pro-civil justice candidates not only command overwhelming support from swing voters, but also appeal to significant blocks of Republicans.
So the next time you hear a talking head on TV suggest gutting our jury system, ask yourself:
-- Who is going to hold corporations and insurance companies responsible for their fraudulent and negligent actions?
-- Who is going to stop corporations from knowingly selling dangerous and defective products?
-- Who is going to make insurance companies treat you fairly?
The answer is a jury of your peers, neighbors and members of your community. Don’t let any political candidate get away with trying to take the right of jury trial away from you.
